American folksinger and songwriter, best known for singing bass with the Weavers. Throughout his life, he was concerned with overcoming racism, inequality, and violence in society. He wrote or cowrote "Wasnt That a Time?", "If I Had a Hammer", and "Kisses Sweeter than Wine", which became Weavers staples. He also familiarized audiences with songs of the 1930s labor movement, such as "We Shall Not Be Moved". Hays Lee was born on March 14, 1914 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was an American actor and singer who appeared in over 100 films and television shows. Lee began his career in the early 1940s, appearing in small roles in films such as The Great Dictator (1940) and Citizen Kane (1941). He went on to star in a number of westerns, including The Gunfighter (1950) and Bad Day at Black Rock (1955). Lee also appeared in a number of musical films, including Singin' in the Rain (1952) and The Pajama Game (1957). He died on May 23, 2006 at the age of 92.
