French Jewish film actor, director, and writer of Persian (father) and Moldovan (mother) descent. Widely known as Michèle Merciers husband in the Angélique series, he directed the 1982 adaption of Les Misérables, and appeared in Vice and Virtue, Le Casse, Les Uns et les Autres and Venus Beauty Institute. At nearly 50 years old, he was baptized in the Roman Catholic church. He married three times, to Marina Vlady, Caroline Eliacheff, and Candice Patou. He had four children.
