American television writer and producer from a noted family, he won eight Emmy awards. He was executive produce on Ryans Hope (1975–1981), and co-head writer on Where the Heart Is (1971–1973), Love of Life (1973–1975), Ryans Hope (1975–1982, 1983), and Search for Tomorrow (1985). Mayer was nominated for ten Daytime Emmy Awards in the categories Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series and Outstanding Daytime Drama Series, for his work on Ryans Hope. He was nominated annually except for 1982, from 1977 to 1984, and won eight times in 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1983, and 1984. Mayer went back to school at the age of 56. He earned a Master of Social Work degree and then studied at a psychoanalytic institute, launching a successful career as a psychoanalyst. He was married to actress and comedian Sasha Von Scherler, the daughter of Stephen and Ruth Litscher, who died in 2000 of lung disease. Mayer Paul Avila is an American graphic designer, author and a professor emeritus at the Rhode Island School of Design. He was born in Los Angeles, California on May 28, 1928.
Avila studied at Chouinard Art Institute and the California Institute of the Arts. He began his career as a graphic designer in the early 1950s. He has worked for several major corporations, including IBM, Xerox and Coca-Cola. Avila is best known for his work in the field of corporate identity. He has designed logos and branding for many companies, including the logos for the City of Los Angeles, the State of California and the United States Postal Service.
Avila is also a prolific author. He has written several books on graphic design, including "Graphic Design for the Real World" and "Typography for Designers and Students". He has also written books on mindfulness and meditation.
Avila has taught at RISD since 1980. He is a recipient of the AIGA Medal, the highest honor given by the American Institute of Graphic Arts. He is also a member of the Alliance Graphique Internationale.
