Jaco Van Dormael is a Belgian film director, screenwriter, and playwright. He is best known for his films Toto le Héros (1991), The Eighth Day (1996), and Mr. Nobody (2009).

Van Dormael was born in Brussels, Belgium. He studied directing at the Institut des Arts de Diffusion in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. After graduating, he worked as an assistant director on several films, including Lacombe Lucien (1974) by Louis Malle and La Menace (1977) by Alain Corneau.

In 1979, Van Dormael directed his first short film, Maedeli la brèche. The film won the Golden Bear for Best Short Film at the Berlin International Film Festival.

Van Dormael's first feature film, Toto le Héros, was released in 1991. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning the Golden Camera at the Cannes Film Festival. Van Dormael's next film, The Eighth Day, was released in 1996. The film was also a critical and commercial success, winning the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2009, Van Dormael released Mr. Nobody, a film about a man who is dying and reliving his life. The film was a critical and commercial success, winning the Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Van Dormael is a member of the Académie royale des Sciences, des Lettres et des Beaux-Arts de Belgique. He has also received the Magritte Award for Best Director three times.
