American basketball player, head coach, and commentator. He played in the guard position in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Boston Celtics (1972–1975), Phoenix Suns (1975–1980), Seattle SuperSonics (1980–1981), New York Knicks (1981–1983) and again for the Phoenix Suns (1983–1984). He then worked from 1985 to 2016 as a coach, including four seasons as the head coach of the Phoenix Suns. In 2019, Westphal was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. Westphal was married to Cindy Westphal, and they had two children together. He was a Christian. Paul Westphal died in Scottsdale, Arizona, on 2 January 2021 after a bout with brain cancer at age 70. Westphal Paul is an American former professional basketball player and coach. He played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) for the Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns, New York Knicks, and Seattle SuperSonics. Westphal was a four-time NBA All-Star and was named to the NBA All-Defensive First Team three times. He was also a member of the United States national basketball team that won a gold medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
After his playing career, Westphal became a coach. He was the head coach of the Suns from 1992 to 1996, the SuperSonics from 1998 to 2000, and the Sacramento Kings from 2009 to 2012. Westphal was named the NBA Coach of the Year in 1993.
Westphal is currently a basketball analyst for ESPN. He is also the author of the book "Westphal on Basketball."
