He was born as Friedrich Anton Pfiffner in Lichtensteig, Switzerland, on March 24, 1905. He joined the Einsiedeln Abbey in 1923 and was ordained a priest in 1929.
In 1965, he was elected abbot of the Einsiedeln Abbey. He served in this role until his death in 1998.
During his time as abbot, Frei Gebhard oversaw the restoration of the Einsiedeln Abbey and the construction of a new pilgrimage center.
He was also a strong advocate for ecumenism and interfaith dialogue.
