Lithuanian President, the first European head of state who lost his post via impeachment in the Parliament on April 6, 2004. A 1979 graduate from Vilnius Civil Engineering, he earned his professional pilots license and was a member of the acrobatic flying squad. In 1984 he graduated from Leningrad Civil Aviation Academy. He became director of flying clubs and held a job in business. He made his entry into politics in 1997 when he was elected a member of the Vilnius City Council and two years later he became that citys mayor. From there he held several political posts including a seat in the Parliament, and on January 5, 2003 was elected as the first President of the Republic of Lithuania. He is married with two children.
